Joy Randall is living her dream as a beauty influencer

Are you a unicorn?

I'm actually a native of Charlotte, NC. Yes, we do exist! We moved here from Durham when I was two.

How did your childhood shape who you are today?

I grew up mainly as an only child. I lost my brother tragically at the age of 11. My parents have been divorced as long as I can remember. Those two major events have helped me to really have a deep compassion for others and helping them with their healing process.

Life-changing events?

Most people don't know this but my brother committed suicide when I was 11, and I was sexually assaulted and robbed at 16.

So we hear you enjoy the art of makeup?

I'm a professional makeup artist and beauty expert. I've been in the business for almost 12 years now. After graduating college, I really hated my job in news. And my high school sweetheart of 10 years had lost both his parents. The two combined put me in a bit of a depression. I'd always begged my mom during school, asking if I could drop out and go to cosmetology school. So she thought it would be good timing for me to go. I did. I got a job at a makeup counter before I graduated - I haven't looked back since.

How is beauty more than skin deep?

I take beauty much further than skin and makeup and help people develop a beautiful lifestyle. My theory is that you can't talk makeup without talking about skin. You can't talk skin without talking health. And you can't talk health without talking emotions. It all ends up being full circle anyway. In my studio, I have a healing space and a #SelfCareStore. It's just something you have to experience to fully appreciate what it’s all about.

What is your dream career?

I'm living it - I'm looking forward to its evolution including a lot more travel, Vogue Magazine, and a community of authentic and beautiful people.

How can your career be challenging?

Giving so much of yourself is very depleting. I'm actually an extreme introvert, even though I work with people, so I need a lot of downtime to restore.

Alma Mater?

I have a degree in communications and broadcasting from NC A&T State University. I'm also a licensed cosmetologist.

Any other loves in your life?

I love art and history; I'm always at home in a museum. And I love documentaries too. I've kinda made them a side business. I create cool experiences for the subscribers of my blog, trying to share everything I'm into with them. We even do #AdultFieldTrips!

What are you passionate about?

I'm passionate about black women who look like me. I'm passionate about living life authentically and helping as many others as I can to live that way as well. I'm passionate about my purpose in this world and simply doing what God wants.

What charities are you involved with?

I've participated in more charity events than I can count. I haven't quite found one in Charlotte that serves in a way that I can really stand behind, so I'm in the process of creating my own.

What do you love about Charlotte?

It's home. There are challenges but the people still have a deep love for wanting the best for the community. Charlotte still has one of the cleanest and most beautiful cities I've seen. No matter where I go, it always feels like home.

Where do you vacation?

Well until I can travel the way I really want to (it's been a tough summer lol), I'm back and forth to ATL or NYC when I want to have fun with friends. As an entrepreneur, I don't think I've ever taken a real one. Sad but true.

What are your proudest accomplishments?

I've been invited twice to attend the first viewing of the Costume Institute's Exhibition at the Met Museum in New York. Anna Wintour was there both times. In a nutshell, I've seen the exhibit way before the celebs see it at the Met Gala.

What outdoor activities do you participate in and where?

I'm really not much of an outdoorsy chick. Lol

Family stats?

Just me and my parents. My friends have become closer than family in many ways.

Favorite spot in Charlotte to eat, shop, grab coffee/smoothie...?

I'm addicted to the pomegranate plunge smoothie at Tropical Smoothie in Metropolitan. I don't shop as much as I used to. And believe it or not, I love Marshall's! I go to different ones in different parts of the city for various things. I know it's weird. Lol

Favorite TV series?

The Deuce on HBO

Favorite movie?

Purple Rain, but I have many.

Favorite book?

The Bible. I know it's corny. lol. But the word is truth in my book.

Favorite app?

Tidal. Jay-Z is a game changer.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

People are always surprised that I am dating someone. lol. But the rest is none of your business.

If money wasn't an issue, what would you do with your time each day?

I would live life exactly the way I'm living it. Just with nicer material things; serve others; help them heal; make people look and feel beautiful.

Any unique talents?

I'm an extreme empath. So I know what people are feeling whether they tell me or not. It's a gift and a curse.

Where do you see yourself retiring?

Somewhere in South America. I'm shooting for Cuba.

Social media accounts?

@Thebeautyinfluencer and @Flawless Makeup Art
